Following their earlier adventures on the White Horse Trail (as published in Walking The White Horses, 2023), David Clensy and his 12-year-old son Charlie set off on another long walk – this time seeking to tackle Wiltshire’s Sarsen Way, from Swindon to Salisbury.
Along the way, they come face to face with much of the county’s ancient heritage – from The Ridgeway, Avebury World Heritage site and Stonehenge to West Kennett Long Barrow and the mysterious Silbury Hill.
But their adventure doesn’t end with their arrival at Salisbury Cathedral, as the father and son duo decide to keep walking – taking on the additional miles of the Cranborne Droves Way from Salisbury to Win Green, near Shaftesbury.
The reader is taken on another lyrical meander through the natural wonders of southern England’s chalk downland environment, its people, heritage and wildlife.
Walking the Standing Stones: Wiltshire’s Sarsen Way & Cranborne Droves Way is published on September 5, 2025, available in paperback, Kindle and Kindle Unlimited.

David Clensy, a writer and former newspaper journalist from Trowbridge, said: “Charlie and I had such an extraordinary time in 2023, walking the White Horse Trail, we wanted to explore more of Wiltshire’s chalk downlands. The Sarsen Way attracted us, taking in such a wealth of world-leading and fascinating prehistoric sites. The new book celebrates both the natural world we experienced on the walk and the heritage treasures we discovered along the way.”
As with the previous book, Charlie’s place alongside the author as they take on the journey, opens up the narrative to become another charming portrait of a father and son relationship.
“In today’s digital world, it’s so important to encourage your children to get out and experience the natural wonders on our doorstep. To be able to do that together has been wonderful.”
David Clensy, who was born and raised in Birkenhead, now lives in Wiltshire. He spent more than 20 years in UK regional journalism, as a reporter, feature writer and magazine editor. Prayer in Time of
