Eighty years ago today, the liberation of northern Europe began with the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy.
Fifteen years ago, in 2009, photographer Simon Galloway and I were lucky enough to have an opportunity to take two veterans of the Battle of Normandy back across the Channel to return to the places where they fought, losing some of their closest friends, and we helped them to find the graves of their long-lost pals in the enormous Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries.
Below, is a short film I put together back in 2009 for the Bristol Post/Western Daily Press, following our experiences with Michael Brennan and Albert Williams that week.
As Wide As All The World, my book of travel writing, which contains a full account of the journey with the two veterans, will be available to download on Kindle completely free of charge from Friday June 7 to Monday June 10, 2024, as a small gesture of appreciation to all who served on D-Day and throughout the rest of the world to advance liberation from tyranny eighty years ago.
