Germany research trip – finding the landscape of the U-boat aces

I’m heading off on a solo trip to Germany, to do some research for the first novel in my forthcoming series about the U-boat aces of the two world wars.

Progress on book one in the new series is going very well – I have read my way through a ridiculously towering pile of books on the history of the period and all the while my draft is growing – the characters and narrative are coming together nicely. But before going any further, I wanted to experience some of the locations I’m writing about, get inside an actual U-boat and learn more about the realities of life at sea in these cramped submarines that played such a devastating role in both conflicts.

For that, I think I need to head over to Germany for a few days of exploration. So it’s time to dust down the passport, first stop is Hamburg …
